Topic : population education
Introduction
population education can be defined as the
education on all matters concerning population. It helps to understand the
nature, cause of population growth. Its needs a conceptual understanding of
both 'population' and 'education'. The term population can be defined as the
people living in a specified geographical area, be it a village, taluk,
district, country or the world as a whole. Education is the process that
imparts , improves or changes the
information, knowledge,understanding , attitudes and so on.
concept of population
education:
According to the UNESCO, 'population education'
is an educational programme which provides opportunities for a study of the
population situation in the family,community,nation and the world, with the
purpose of developing in the students rational and responsible attittudes and
behaviour towards that situation.
orgin and development:
Population education programme in the country
owes its orgin to the national seminar on population education held at bombay
in 1969. The seminar recommended that population education be introduced in the
curriculum.The national conference on population education held in new delhi in
1971, in which the directers of education of the different states and other educationalist participated
reiterated same recommendations. National population policy announced in 1976
and revised in 1977 stress the need to introduce 'population education' in
schools. The joint meeting of all the boards of secondary education in the
country held in new delhi in 1978 unanimously decided to include population
education a topic of study in schools.The government of India in collaboration
with the United Nations fund for population activities (UNFPA), launched the
national population education project (NPEP) in 1980, to spread the message of
small family norm among the school and college students.NCERT provides guidance
and support to population education programmes in schools through SCERT.The
higher education project is being implemented by the UGC through the
universities and colleges.
Need and importance of
population education:
Todays childrens are tomorrow's citizens and
hence they should get an insight into population growth and its
consequences.Education is the most effective way to conscientize people of the
need for accepting 'small family norm'. Students can play a major role in
spreading this message.They need to be sufficiently trained in 'how to spread
the message'. Hence it is necessary to include population education in school
curriculum.
Objectives of population education:
To develop an understanding of
i. Relevant demographic concepts and processes.
ii. The rapid growth of population and it causes.
iii.The influence of population trends on various aspects of human life.
iv. The evil effect of over population in the environment.
v. The scientific and medical advancement resulting in the imbalance between
death rate and birth rate.
vi. The biological factors and phenomenon of reproduction responsible for
continuation of species.
vii.The merit of of small family norm.
viii. The relation between population size and the quality of life.
ix. The urbanization and its causes effects.
x. An awareness of population policies and programmes of the country.
